Our European Workshop

The Senior University of A Coruña has created a new European workshop, named “More than Neighbours!”.The workshops in the Senior University’s curriculum have the following features:
  • More active and participatory methodology
  • Implementation of skills and resources already acquired by learners, and acquisition of new resources.
  • Enhancing research attitude and skills: learning to learn and learn to share.
  • More responsive to the needs and individual potencial of students.
  • Promotion of active European citizenship among senior students.

To achieve the objectives of the MTN project, during the academic year 2009-2010, an European workshop will be performed at the Senior University of A Coruña. A total of 64 students, in two geographical areas (Ferrol & A Coruña), have already enrolled the workshop.The general objectives of the MTN European Workshop in Senior University of A Coruña are:
  • Learn to learn and learn to share.
  • Giving the students a more active role in their learning process.
  • Teaching the students to work in a team.

The specific objectives of the workshop are:
  • Strengthen the use of IT and English to foster communication between students of the project and develop the potentials of the web site and/or the social network: exchanges of information, opinions.
  • Discussion of the topics of the Learning part of European identity.

Didactic Methodology and activities
Our methodology is based on team and individual activities, with fortnightly 2-hour meetings, plus small-group work. This is supplemented by attendance to master classes and conferences and by virtual learning. The aim is to enhance the knowledge and use of IT tools, such as internet, email, blog design, the project’s website and/or social network amongst students.
Learners have easy access to different learning resources in order to apply the knowledge and skills they learn under the supervision and support of the teacher inside and outside the classroom. We combine face-to-face instruction with computer-mediated instruction through internet.The following programme of activities will be implemented:
  • IT support classes.
  • Language Sessions: German and English
  • Lectures about topics of the project.
  • Training on research methodology and searching information.
  • Field work (data collection and trips to key places)
  • Interviews on European identity.
  • Writing essays and preparation of the presentations (power point presentations).
  • Publication on-line in the blog of the workshop.
  • Transnational meeting of learners and coordinators where the learners will present their essays and exchange experiences and knowledge on European culture with the learners from other countries.

The following essays will be developed during this academic year:
  • Historic Relationship between Spain and Flanders.
  • De-industrialization: History of the Factory of Tobacco in A Coruña.
  • Migration from Galicia to Europe.
  • Transition to democracy and integration to the UE in Spain, former DDR, Poland and Czech Republic: differences and similarities.
  • Comparative study of the Social Security Systems and National Health Services in the partner countries.
  • European identity from homeland identity.
